Whales and dolphins are mammals and breathe air into their lungs, just like we do. They cannot breathe underwater like fish can as they do not have gills. They breathe through nostrils, called a blowhole, located right on top of their heads.

While dolphins breathe air like other mammals, they also breathe uniquely to most mammal species. For dolphins to inhale and exhale, they must breathe through their blowhole, not their mouth. This is because there is a major difference between dolphins and land mammals, which is that dolphins live exclusively in the ocean.

That Dolphins and Whales are air breathing mammals, just like us. That Dolphins are conscious breathers – meaning that they must be conscious to continue swimming and coming up for air? We are unconscious breathers – we go to sleep and continue to breathe unconsciously… So how do Dolphins sleep if they must remain conscious?

Dolphins, just like humans, are mammals. Just like us, they give live birth, rely on oxygen to survive, take in air through their nostrils, and even have a belly button! However, they sleep differently as they need to continuously breathe while sleeping. For us humans, we have an automatic breathing reflex that allows us to breathe unconsciously.

Dolphins, however, take the air from the surface and hold it in their lungs. To understand how dolphins breathe, it's important to know how what happens while they are submerged. A series of physiological changes occur in the dolphin when they are underwater, allowing it to stay there for prolonged periods of time.

Dolphins are water dwellers but air breathers. We were created to be earth dwellers but prayer breathers. Breathe prayer in the same way as dolphins breath air -- pray without ceasing!

Whales and dolphins are conscious breathers, meaning that they think before they breathe, while humans breathe automatically. If a dolphin loses consciousness, he will not be able to keep his blow-hole clear of the water and will suffocate and die. Other dolphins will jostle a dolphin at risk in this way to keep him awake, and will hold the ...

Stripped Dolphins have not been successfully kept in captivity. Striped dolphins are conscious breathers, meaning they never fall completely asleep and are always partially aware of their surrounding; even when at rest. This allows these marine mammals to come up for air when necessary and maintain awareness of potential threats.

Dolphins can live for a very long time and females tend to live longer than males. Female bottlenose dolphins have been known to live for more than 60 years and dolphins up to 48 years old have given birth. The oldest known dolphin is a bottlenose dolphin named Nicklo by researchers studying dolphins in Sarasota Bay in Florida.
Dolphins and porpoises differ in their faces, fins, and body shapes. Dolphins have longer noses, bigger mouths, more curved dorsal fins, and longer, leaner bodies than porpoises. The Northeastern Offshore Spotted Dolphin, shown here, has a falcate, or sickle-shaped dorsal fin and light spotting on the belly.
In general, dolphins make two kinds of sounds, “whistles” and “clicks” (listen to the false killer whales on this page). Clicks are used to sense their surroundings through echolocation, while they use whistles to communicate with other members of their species and very likely, with other species too.
Most dolphins are marine and live in the ocean or brackish waters along coastlines. There are a few species, however, like the South Asian river dolphin and the Amazon river dolphin , or boto, that live in freshwater streams and rivers.

Dolphins eat a variety of fish, squid, shrimps, jellyfish and octopuses. The types of fish and other creatures dolphins eat depend on the species of dolphin, where the dolphins live and the wildlife that shares their habitats.
When sleeping , dolphins often rest motionless at the surface of the water, breathing regularly or they may swim very slowly and steadily, close to the surface. In shallow water, dolphins sometimes sleep on the seabed rising regularly to the surface to breath.
Common bottlenose dolphins (referred to hereafter simply as bottlenose dolphins) are found throughout the world in both offshore and coastal waters, including harbors, bays, gulfs, and estuaries of temperate and tropical waters (estuaries are the areas where rivers meet the sea). They are one of the most well-studied marine mammals in the wild.

In fact, dolphins are able to scare off and intimidate their main predator (sharks) just by swimming in large groups.
A group of dolphins is called a pod. Dolphins are social mammals that interact with one another, swim together, protect each other, and hunt for food as a team. Pod life plays a very important role in protecting dolphins from predators such as sharks. By shivering the muscles create additional energy and heat allowing the dolphin to stay warm when it is in very cold environments and prevents the muscles from stiffening up. One of the most well-known ways for dolphins to stay warm has to do with the fact that dolphins have a thick layer of insulated blubber that surrounds their body.
Dolphins are active predators and eat a wide variety of fishes, squids, and crustaceans such as shrimps. The foods available to a dolphin vary with its geographic location.
