Dolphins play an important role in keeping their environment in balance. They eat other animals – mainly fish and squid – and are themselves a source of food for some sharks and other creatures. Without dolphins, the animals they prey on would increase in number, and their predators wouldn't have as much to eat.

Dolphins perform crucial roles in their native ecosystems. Wherever they’re found, from the murky depths of the Amazon River to the cold currents of the North Pacific, dolphins function as high-level predators, primarily of fish and squid (and, in the case of the biggest dolphin of all, the orca, virtually anything in the ocean).

Dolphins are an important part of the marine ecosystem. Nobody can hunt dolphins," Tonay has said and briefly added: "Since dolphins are not fish, they cannot spawn millions of eggs and reproduce like fish. Dolphins, like us, are mammals that produce one calf a year, carry it in its belly for months and breastfeed it.

For better or for worse, it is human nature to care more about animals that we view as intelligent. When guests visit DRC and see Talon doing math, or Tanner imitating in such a clever way, it invites a new kind of connection with the dolphins. This connection can inspire more care and compassion for dolphins and the environment they live in.

The Northeastern Offshore Spotted Dolphin, shown here, has a falcate, or sickle-shaped dorsal fin and light spotting on the belly.
