Dolphins are active predators and eat a wide variety of fishes, squids, and crustaceans such as shrimps. The foods available to a dolphin vary with its geographic location. Though bottlenose dolphins will eat a variety of fish, squids, and crustaceans, they have preferred meals, just like we do! What do bottlenose dolphins eat if they have a choice? Territory often plays a role in a dolphin’s favorite meal. For example, dolphins living along coastal areas gravitate toward fish and invertebrates, like shrimp.

Bottlenose dolphins are carnivores and they tend to eat a wide variety of prey. But they usually live off benthic (bottom-dwelling) fish. Apart from schooling fishes, dolphins also feed on a wide range of other prey species like squids, eels, shrimps and other crustaceans and invertebrates (including cephalopods).

In the winter, salmon is scarce, and so they eat herring and mackerel. Bottlenose dolphins living elsewhere eat their favoured local fish which can be mullet, mackerel, catfish and more tropical species of fish. All dolphins have teeth but they don't chew their food, they just, grab, bite and swallow!

Dolphin Diet in Captivity. The dolphin diet in captivity is a little different than in the wild. For starters, instead of live, fresh fish, dolphins are served frozen fish. But dolphin facilities still try and give their dolphins a variety of fish. For instance, SeaWorld feeds their adult bottlenose dolphins a variety of fish including mackerel, smelt, capelin, and herring.
