Why Are Killer Whales Called Killer Whales If They’re Dolphin? The reason is actually quite simple. They’re called killer whales because that’s what they are. Killers of whales. Ancient sailors used to observe orca killing large whales out in the ocean, and referred to them as asesina ballenas, which is Spanish for whale killers. When translated to English, the name got changed as killer whale simply sounded better.

So, if these toothed whales are more similar to dolphins, why did orcas start being called “whales” in the first place? First, it’s said that many sailors spotted orcas preying on other whales and larger marine species, garnering them the nickname “whale killer.” Over time, this namesake morphed into “killer whale.”

The name ‘killer whale’ is actually a misnomer, because killer whales do not belong to the group, whales. In fact, they are dolphins. So, why are these dolphins called killer whales?

Dolphins and whales are closely related. Orcas were given the name ‘killer whale’ by ancient sailors’ observations of groups of orcas hunting and preying on larger whale species. They called orcas asesina ballenas, or ‘whale killer’ – a term that was eventually flipped around to the easier ‘killer whale’.

It is thought that the name “killer whale”, even though it’s a dolphin, came from sailors and whalers observing that Orcas frequently killed whales and ate them and thus they were known as “whale killers”, which eventually morphed to “killer whales”.

While using the term killer whale, clearly the killer whale is acknowledged as a whale. But now it is not common any more because of unknown reasons, - and supported by the Wikipedians in charge. No big deal, but an interesting development, hereby documented. I'll leave it here.

Killer whales fall into the toothed whale suborder, which consists of a number of whale species along with all species of dolphin and porpoise. As stated before killer whales are actually considered dolphins which is why they are part of the toothed whale suborder.

Orca gladiator (Bonnaterre, 1789) The killer whale or orca ( Orcinus orca) is a toothed whale belonging to the oceanic dolphin family, of which it is the largest member. It is recognizable by its black-and-white patterned body.
